Chopin in Mallorca Vol.I
 Listen to previews |
ILAN ROGOFF - Volume One of the complete works composed by Chopin in Mallorca during the winter of 1838/1839. Mallorca has long been renowned for hosting many artists, from writers to musicians, Frederic Chopin no doubt was one of the island's most illustrious visitors. His three months of joy, hardship and creative output in the winter of 1838-1839 were a highpoint in the composer's life and work.
This period also marked the climax of a passionate and turbulent affair with George Sand, which had begun in 1836.
Ilan Rogoff performs a potent rendition of this period of Chopin's life...his sensitivity and poetic grandeur is strikingly distinctive and intensely personal. (Volume Two is also available from MOOCSOUND as a separate download).

Schumann - Carnaval
 Listen to previews |
ILAN ROGOFF - Carnaval immortalises Schumann's relationship with Ernestine von Fricken. Like the Sonatas and Fantasie (also available from MOOCSOUND as a separate download), these works highlight distinct facets of the musical personality and social nature of Schumann and his propensity for musical portraiture. Musical portraiture was intimately connected with Schumann's sense of persona and his role as an artist. It gave him a means to express the Romantic notion of personality. In the Romantic era the universal concept of the polarity and synthesis of opposites became a widely used theme. Ilan Rogoff carefully displays opposite facets of Schumann's personality as he originally portrayed them: the dreamer vs the passionate, the intellectual vs the earthy, the introvert vs the extrovert.

Schumann - Sonata and Fantasie
 Listen to previews |
ILAN ROGOFF brilliantly performs the Sonata in G minor and the Fantasie. The Sonata in G minor is dedicated to Schumann's intimate friend, Henriette Voigt, whilst Fantasie expresses through hidden allusions, the composers love for Clara Wieck(portrait). The works also highlight a distinct facet in Schumann's musical personality, his admiration for virtuosity, his private inner self and his extrovert social nature. Above all, the works tesitfy to Schumann's unique propensity for musical portraiture: his ability to depict and evoke real and imagined characters and to convey ideas and attitudes in a new way. (Schumann's Carnaval in C is also available from MOOCSOUND as a seperate download).
